Bad Science by Ben Goldacre review

My name is Dax and I am a cynic. I do not trust people, and I really do not trust corporations. I do not trust newspapers or TV, in fact I don’t trust most media. I guess if I think about it, I don’t trust people much too. Some people tell me I’m a cynic, as if it’s a bad thing. I’m quite happy being a cynic; the sad thing is that I’m seldom wrong. What I like about it is that I am never disappointed, but on the odd occasion I am pleasantly surprised. This book should be read by everyone, and once everyone has read it I think there will be a lot more cynics around.

We seem eager to buy and buy into all sorts of products, remedies and theories. Magazines and newspapers are forever telling us about some new ‘development’ and we assume the science behind it is 100% because they wouldn’t lie. They may not be lying, but they are often stretching the truth or even twisting it.

Do you recognise any of these topics?

  • Homeopathy
  • Patrick Holford
  • Antioxidants
  • Matthias Rath
  • Measles, mumps & rubella (MMR) vaccination

These along with many others are dealt with in this book. To take one as an example, we are told over and over that [Read the rest of this entry...]

Sidewalk Cafe review

A while ago I tweeted about having fantastic poached eggs at the Commodore hotel in the Waterfront (what do you mean you’re not following me on Twitter? Get with the program, click here), and I’m excited to report I had great poached eggs again on Saturday, this time at the Sidewalk Cafe. It may seem strange to go on about poached eggs but it is really quite seldom that one is served properly poached eggs in this town. Anybody can fry or scramble eggs but poaching them takes a lot more skill and care so I use them as an indicator of the capabilities of the kitchen.

The Sidewalk Cafe has been around for quite some time. I can recall having drinks there a few times, many years ago in the days when I still drank Savanna. The place was relatively unexciting and it never changed in all the years it was there. There wasn’t really any good reason to go except maybe convenience if Carlyle’s down the road was full. So why is it full all the time now? I popped in for breakfast on Saturday and was lucky to get a table.

This is a question which I ask all the time. Why are some restaurants empty, and then when they are taken over by someone else they are full? [Read the rest of this entry...]

Jardine review

You don’t really need me to review this restaurant for you. Jardine has been around for nearly four years now and in that time it has been in the Eat Out top ten several times, has been awarded 3 out of 3 starts by Rossouw’s Restaurant Guide and has also been in the World Top 50 Restaurants. Apart from that it has consistentely received rave reviews from all who visit it and has accumulated an enviable following.

I went for the first time only recently, and despite my elevated expectations, I wasn’t disappointed. Unfortunately our visit was rather rushed as we had to show to attend the same evening. I would like to have taken my time and made the most of the experience but will hopefully have the opportunity to do that on my next visit. We did mention to the kitchen that we were under time constraints and between the kitchen and the service staff, they did an excellent job of moving things along at a pace where we didn’t run late but didn’t feel rushed either.

Jardine is housed in a double storey building on the corner of Bree and Bloem Streets. The downstairs section is a bar and small lounge area where one could have pre drinks, but it’s non smoking so smokers have to smoke outside. The 70 seater restaurant is upstairs. Tables inside have a good view of the open kitchen and can enjoy watching the hustle and bustle as their dishes are prepared. The tables on the enclosed balcony will suit those who prefer a quieter dining environment. The decor is fairly understated, it doesn’t make you look around in awe but it equally won’t earn anyone’s disapproval. Jardine is definitely about the food. [Read the rest of this entry...]

A Sea Change review

A Sea Change is a gentle documentary, in contrast to some of the documentaries which give you nightmares for months afterwards like Earthlings. This documentary looks at the topic of ocean acidification which is something most people are not aware of. We are aware that the oceans absorb carbon dioxide, in fact scientists have been looking for ways to make the oceans absorb more carbon dioxide in an attempt to reduce climate change. However, as the level of carbon dioxide in the ocean increases, so does the acidity of the ocean. The change so far has been very slight and mostly in colder areas but the implications are huge.

Many sea creatures need a certain level of acidity (low) in order to [Read the rest of this entry...]

Superette review

When the Biscuit Mill opened a few years ago, it didn’t take a prophet to predict that Woodstock was on track for a revival. I must admit that I imagined it would happen faster but I think it is finally hitting a tipping point now. There are several restaurants and clubs popping up. I enjoy getting lunch from The Kitchen, and I recently breakfasted at a new place called La Bottega. I’ve seen a newish place called Bread at the revamped Bromwell which I want to check out. Then there is The Superette opened by the guys who brought you the Neighbourgoods Market at the Biscuit Mill.

It’s quite easy to miss as the signage is quite subtle. I drove past it a couple if times before spotting it. But it’s on the right hand side, just before the Biscuit Mill if you’re heading away from town. You may not be aware that the guys who do the market also brought you the What if the World gallery, so they are creative guys. Which might explain why, when I walked into the Superette, I wasn’t sure if I was in a restaurant or an art installation.

The place is such a carefully put together combination of retro and cool contemporary elements that it’s hard to believe it’s a restaurant too. After eating there, it does seem that the restaurant element is a bit secondary. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Truth Coffee Cult launch

Finally an answer to the question that is on everyone’s lips: What’s the difference between a cappuccino and a flat white? You will hear all sorts of answers to that question but few people are as qualified to answer it as David Donde. Cape Town coffee aficionados will be familiar with Origin coffee and those in the know will be aware that David Donde was the man responsible for establishing that brand.

He has since moved on and started his own coffee distribution enterprise with a coffee shop where people can drink his carefully selected blends and purchase coffee for home use. Truth. Coffee Cult, on the corner of Buitengracht and Somerset Road (in the Prestwich Memorial building), has only been open a few days and the news of a fresh (pardon the pun) coffee option is spreading.

I popped in the other day to check it out and have a chat with David about his concept. He felt that Origin [Read the rest of this entry...]

The Brass Bell review

The Brass Bell has been around for a many years (more than 60) and in fact, it’s been a long time since I was last there. It used to be a seedy bar, with some very interesting (read unappealing) characters who frequented it. After my first experience there, I was in no hurry to return which is why many years have passed.

Much has changed at the Brass Bell since those days. They have expanded and taken advantage of their location right on the water’s edge in Kalk Bay. There are now several different sections which make up the Brass Bell. The Main, The Cabin , The Waters Edge, The Pavilion and The Bikini Deck each offers a different menu, ranging from fancy food at The Main through to burgers and bar snacks at The Bikini Deck. So it depends on what you are going for.

I cannot comment on the quality of the food at The Main restaurant, when we went we ate at The Bikini Deck, one of the outside sections where you can enjoy the sunshine and some casual food. Which to me is the most appealing aspect of the Brass Bell.

We went as a large group and the service and kitchen managed our orders without much difficulty. We tried [Read the rest of this entry...]

L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate review

Having done my research into what the Queen’s Plate is all about, I decided I had better take it seriously. So I organised myself a white suit and a hot date (see pic 1 – and notice my strict adherence to the blue and white theme). I also tried to have an early night so I would be fresh, but actually ended up having quite a late one at Ricks’ Cafe. It wasn’t a problem though, we were aiming to get to the races at about 1pm so I had time to sleep in and run some errands before slipping into the suit and picking up aforementioned hot date (actually she picked me up).

Because the Queen’s Plate is about one fifth the size of the Met, everything is different, including the approach and parking. There was no traffic congestion (something I am allergic to since the Big Concerts Killers concert debacle) and we drove in and parked inside the track (yes, in the middle). Then ambled our way to the Style Lounge Village. There were several colour wristbands and we found the tent we belonged in quite easily. The hospitality area is just a small section of the track, very contained. We had some snacks and drinks and placed some bets and actually watched some horses run past (yes, can you believe it?).

It was a terribly hot day so we were happy to be in the tent, with somewhere to sit and drinks on tap. The one walk we did take to see what was happening around nearly resulted in sunstroke. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Grand Cafe and Beach review

The other day someone asked me if I thought the Grand on the Beach is the place of the season and after thinking about it I said yes. So it’s important for me to get this review out to you. I’ve been twice, once for lunch and once for dinner, so that combined with my review of the Grand in Camps Bay should give you a good overview of the place of the season.

I’m impressed by what they have managed to do with a shed, because that’s basically what it was. To take a large steel wharehouse and turn it into something that is visually appealing and has ambiance and character is an achievement. They have focused their money and energies on what is important and ignored things which aren’t that important. As you walk in your attention is captured by the awesome, huge bar that runs the length of the venue. A very interesting and unusual bar counter is framed by nicely lit shelves holding liquor behind the bar. Then you turn briefly to the right and see the huge 24 seater table in the middle of the place, surrounded by smaller tables and at the end is the kitchen hidden from view by a large pizza oven. Turning to the right, you look through the big steel doors and see the view in the picture above. You won’t be able to stop yourself walking outside to survey the scene.

They shipped the sand in and have created a private beach which a beautiful blue sea horizon. The sea is often filled with boats adding to the composition of the image which will stay in your mind long after you have left and may well be a stage for some pleasant dreams one night. They have resisted the urge to pack the beach with tables and chairs, with only a few tables, chairs and couches, the beach retains its integrity.

When I went for lunch we had a table on the sand which was novel but I think I prefer terra firma so would elect to sit on the actual veranda next time. There are tables with attached benches on the sand which would be a better option. Although when I was there one of the table capsized as they are not properly supported. On my second visit I noticed that they now put bricks under the benches to prevent similar incidents. The beach seems to be quite protected from the wind, but it did get breezy when I was there for lunch.

Once you’ve spent some time there and are no longer overwhelmed by the awesomeness, you start to notice the small things like [Read the rest of this entry...]

L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate intro

My only exposure to horse racing so far has been the J&B Met. I’ve attended it for about 10 consecutive years. You can read one of my reviews here and see photos here and here. The only other race day I have wanted to attend is the Durban July, until recently. For the last couple of years I’ve heard about the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate and it sounds like something I need to attend. I thought I should do some research before I go and this is what I found out:

The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate is the oldest and most prestigious event on the South African horse racing calendar. It will be raced for the 149th time at Kenilworth Race Course on Saturday, January 9, 2010. Although the country’s greatest thoroughbreds are the stars of the day, with elements of haute couture fashion, vintage cars and fine wine, it is also a highlight on the social calendar.

Unlike the Met, there is a strict dress code so everyone has to dress smartly. There is also no option of just arriving and having a picnic on the grass, all entertainment is in the hospitality tents.

Apart from a fun day at the races (I could do with betting tips, please email me) they have also got a top notch entertainment lineup for afterwards. Gang of Instrumentals, Just Jinjer, Goldfish and Shaun Duvet will all be performing. That is some serious entertainment and I, for one, will not be missing any of it.

Tickets are R250 and available from Computicket. Unless you want the VIP package at R2000, in which case you can contact Elche Goosen on 011 347 1452/082 225 0286 or email elche@circa.co.za

Come back here after the weekend to read my review.
