11/4/2010 – A lot of people seem to miss the search feature of the site. If you’re looking for a specific restaurant or topic, use the search bar at the top right hand of the page.

15/12/09 – Don’t forget that Relax with Dax is optimised for mobiles too. When you visit the site from your mobile it automatically shows you just the list of posts (no graphics and layout) and there is a search facility at the bottom so you can easily find the review you are looking for. Just browse to the normal URL www.relax-with-dax.co.za

15/8/09 – I’ve added two widgets to the sidebar, one shows the most popular posts currently and the other shows random posts. Both will be of interest to readers when browsing the site.

3 Tons of Fun at On Broadway review

This review is a bit late to help you because tonight is the last show. But I’m sure the show will be on again soon and it also gives me an opportunity to talk about the new On Broadway.

On Broadway has moved to what was the old New Space Theatre next to the Grand Daddy hotel in Long Street. The theatre is upstairs and the restaurant is on street level where the old Time Out Cafe used to be. We ate at the restaurant before the show but I think I’ll review that separately because I think they want the restaurant to stand on it’s own and attract people who aren’t necessarily going to see a show at the theatre. But seeing as you’re so well behaved, I’ll tell you that the food is not bad and it’s really good value.

The theatre is a proper theatre, albeit small. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Brio review

Brio is in the old Riboville space and is owned by Lauren and Skippy who also own the Codfather in Camps Bay. It has a very different feel from Riboville. While Riboville was a large space with modern decor juxtapositioned against the old original wood paneling and marble walls, Brio embraces the old feel and the decor reflects the style and class of that era. Lovely chandeliers and ornate furniture combine to create a unique space. Some aspects remind me of the recently restored Casa Labia in Muizenburg. One might think that the space and decor would create a stiff environment, but it’s actually warm, welcoming and casual.

Brio is much smaller than Riboville was, which helps with the atmosphere. Where the sushi bar used to be is now a lounge (which can be used as a private dining option for functions etc) and on the other side is Liquorice and Lime coffee shop, so you can’t access Brio from St Georges mall side. The old bank manager’s office (which was a private dining rom, is now the smoking room with couches and a fireplace. The vault downstairs, one of the most interesting elements of this old building (built in 1893) is going to be used for something interesting apparently, but we’ll have to wait to see what that is as they are keeping it as a surprise.

The menu is quite short, with the mains consisting of approximately six meat options, six fish options, a chicken option and a vegetarian option. Prices are about normal for a smart Cape Town restaurant. A fillet steak with pepper sauce costs R136, or R116 without sauce. A burger with guacomole and bacon costs R79, and the whole baby chicken seems quite pricey at R149. We were in the mood for seafood and seeing as there is a connection to the Codfather, we thought we would give it a go. Instead of having the grilled calamari (R49) and steamed mussels (R58) for starter, then moving onto linefish (R118) and prawns (R189), we opted for the seafood platter for two (R600). They did twist convince us to have the deep fried camembert (served with rocket, caramelised macadamia nuts, figs and a balsamic – R62) to start. The starter was delicious, the fresh rocket cut through the rich camembert and the caramelised macadamia nuts were an interesting addition.

The seafood platter was really good. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Bizerca review

This is another restaurant that I should have visited long ago but just never got round to it. It would be difficult not to go with high expectations because it has been getting rave reviews and was in the Eat out top ten for 2009 and 2010.

The negative comments I heard were that it lacks atmosphere and that it can be inconsistent, some having been more than once and not enjoyed it as much every time.

When I arrived, I could see why people commented on the lack of atmosphere. The walls of two sides of the restaurant are made of glass so you can see in and it looks a little like Relish looked, with the concrete floor and modern seats. But when you actually walk in, the atmosphere is not lacking, it’s warm in both temperature and ambiance. I went on a Monday night and they were more than half full which is impressive. From our table you could see through a glass window into the kitchen which also adds to the ambiance.

While waiting for my dining partners I browsed the menu and wine list. The printed menu consists of their popular dishes which are always available. For instance, their raw Norwegian salmon salad (R85) and the pig trotter with seared scallop (R105). The wine list has some interesting options and is reasonably priced. We ordered a bottle of the Boer & Brit (R180) which I have heard so much about. It was pretty good. [Read the rest of this entry...]

Franschhoek Bastille Festival review

This was the first year that the Bastille Festival did not clash with the Knysna Oyster Festival which is great for those that enjoy both events (like I do). I’m not sure how this affected the attendance, but I believe it was the busiest festival so far.

We decided to make a weekend of it, rather than just go up for the day. We spent the morning at Haut Espoir estate where Rob took us on a pleasant fynbos walk. He pointed out various fynbos species and explained a bit about them. It was interesting to hear the medicinal/healing properties of some of the plants. Some fynbos is really quite beautiful and on a sunny, clear day with the mountains as a backdrop everything looks even better.

It really was the most incredible weather the whole weekend. It was hard to believe we are still in winter. We then moved from the sunny outdoors to the barrel cellar where we tasted several wines direct from the barrel. This is always an interesting exercise, tasing wines at various stages of development and also comparing the impact of different types of wood on the wines. We were also treated to a taste of the as yet unnamed white version of the Gentle Giant. It’s looking very promising.

After wine tasting we went back into town to join the festivities at the festival tent. Franschhoek was crowded and the tent was packed. I don’t know why they run the festival from midday to 5pm. It’s a really short time and people have to queue for ages to get in. If people are going to drive that far, they should have more time to enjoy the festival. I would have it from at latest 11am and close it earliest at 6pm.

There was a good vibe in the tent with live music and a friendly crowd. There were quite a few food options ranging from [Read the rest of this entry...]

Zenzero review

It feels like ages since I’ve written a restaurant review. This Waterfront blogging gig really took over. I have some negative reviews to share with you but thought I would start with a positive one first. We’re all struggling a little with post World Cup depression so we don’t need more negativity.

The Kove and Bungalow opened a while back, under the same ownership as Paranga and Pepenero. While Kove remains, Bungalow has been converted into an Italian restaurant called Zenzero recently. I was invited to come and check it out, which I did last night.

While Bungalow was very summery in white and light blue, Zenzero is warmer in cream and brown with softer lighting. The restaurant actually has two sections, an inside section and an outside section. While the inside section has been transformed into a warmer place, the outside section is still catering for summer with white couches and wooden chairs. When we went it was freezing cold and the inside section was half full but the outside section was, for obvious reasons, empty. It’s modern, contemporary Italian, more in the style of Il Leone than your neighbourhood trattoria.

We chose the table closest to the faux fire, which in the end got the better of us and we had to retreat to another table to enjoy our desserts otherwise we would have overheated. While we perused the menu, our waitress brought us each a roll, accompanied by olives, chopped up tomato with herbs and some cubes of fresh parmesan cheese. It was all good quality stuff and a pleasant change from the plain old roll with butter.

Zenzero is open breakfast, lunch and supper. I had a quick peek at the breakfast and lunch menus. The breakfast options are fairly standard with an English breakfast going for R55 and omlettes ranging from R50 to R70. The lunch menu offers tramezzinis, also ranging from R50 to R70. The fillings are a bit more interesting than normal; the chorizo and artichoke caught my eye. I’m sure the dinner options are available at lunch time too.

For starters I was struggling to choose between [Read the rest of this entry...]

Amphitheatre fan zone at the V&A Waterfront

One of the things I like about the V&A Waterfront is that they want people to come and enjoy themselves, it’s not just about getting them to spend money. The last fan zone I checked out was the free one at the amphitheatre. Because the amphitheatre is right in the middle of the Waterfront, it draws interested passers by. The people keen to watch the game arrive earlier to grab a seat. By start time there are people standing around the edges and as the game progresses, a big crowd accumulates. The vibe is great and it’s a great mix of people. Some friends of mine here from overseas chose to watch most of their games at the amphitheatre.

The screen is really big and so is the sound. If you get a seat then it’s good visibility, but if you arrive late then you’ll be stuck at the back. The obvious negatives are that [Read the rest of this entry...]

Free WiFi at V&A Waterfront

It’s quite amazing to see how ubiquitious the Internet has become. People communicate via email more than fax or phone and social media sites are the most visited sites on the Internet. When people buy devices now, they want it to have Internet access via wireless or 3G. Most smartphones integrate with social media sites like Facebook and offer applications to access others.

In a recent survey reported on by CNN, roughly 50% of respondents said they would rather forgo sex than internet access! In South Africa the new Electronic Communications Act promises universal access to electronic communication services and Cape Town is aiming to become the silicon hub of Africa. In order to achieve that, fibre optic cable is being laid around the city and at some point Cape Town should become one giant hotspot so you can access the Internet from wherever you are.

In the mean time, we have to rely on hotspots dotted around the city by various providers. Many people take advantage of hotspots at restaurants and coffee shops. I posted a list of these a while back. There was recently a big frenzy around a [Read the rest of this entry...]
