Cape Town Restaurant Specials – Winter 2009

PLEASE NOTE: Most of these specials are no longer valid, the one I know are still valid I have put in red

One of the things I like about Cape Town in the winter, is that there are plenty of restaurant specials and winter menus to take advantage of. It’s the perfect opportunity to eat at some of the restaurants that are normally out of your budget. I’ve listed those I am aware of here, feel free to add others as a comment. Bear in mind that the specials are often extended or the times change, so I would recommend calling ahead to check if the special is on when you are planning to visit (also, when I say everyday, I mean everyday that they are open).

I thought that Salushi’s half-price sushi was valid between 12 and 3pm every day of the week. Has this changed recently?

I read somewhere that Salushi had extended the half price sushi from 3pm to 5pm but I haven’t called them to verify.

    OOPS!
The contact number you have for Catharina’s on this page is wrong. The correct number is Tel: 021 713 2222 (as per your other page – http://www.relax-with-dax.co.za/?p=118)

  10. Dax dude, thanks for the list – very useful.

So useful in fact that it’s been emailed to me again several times without any reference to the site. It happens.

However, I’ve also seen it copied without credit in other blogs (including the very popular imod.co.za). These guys are making cash (they have advertising) off your content!

Thanks for letting me know, Al. It looks like everyone in Cape Town has received an email with my list at least once. As you pointed out, none of them credit me, which is a bummer. I can only assume these other bloggers didn’t know the source.

I commented on their posts in case they are interested in crediting me.

  12. Hi Dax

Apologies for publishing the list without giving you credit – will amend that right away.

You are right – an email has been flying around and I received this list from friend (via email).

Had I known it was your list I would have given you the credit – I always do on The Cru.

While we are talking about the list – what are your picks from it?

Hi Brendon, thanks for adding the credit.

What are my picks? Well, let’s see…

Last night I went to the Cape Colony at the Mount Nelson for their 4 course pairing. It’s unbelievably good and at that price you’d be making a mistake not to go. Seriously.

I love Caprice burgers, so I’m gonna hit that 2 for 1 special hard.

I’ve been wanting to try Terroir for a while now, so this seems like a good chance and same with La Colombe.

Hola Dax. A group of 6 of us had brunch at Bungalow in Camps Bay a couple of weeks ago, and we were pleasantly surprised when our bill arrived – the entire cost was halved ‘because it was raining’ – apparently it’s a winter special policy.

  22. Hi Dax

some friends of mine went to Beluga last night to take up their three course dinner special only to be told that they do not offer it.

I checked around online and found this:

    http://www.food24.com/Restaurant/Specials/Display/0,,624,00.html

it clearly shows that there is a three course dinner menu.

just wanted to know if indeed there is a special and how food24 could have got it wrong?

    thanks

I’m trying to keep the list comprehensive, so I’m updating it with specials as I hear about them. I’ve now added Hildebrand and Reubens [thanks JPR] and moved Beluga to continuous specials.

@Brendon, I got the Beluga special off their website, but I checked again and they have removed it, so it seems they are not offering it anymore. Sorry for any inconvenience.

As I mentioned in the preamble, it’s best to check the specials are still on before going as the restaurants will not notify me when they change or cancel any special offers.

The special at Aubergine of ‘Two courses R185′, is about R185 to much. Very mediocre and poor value for money.
There are far better places on this list to enjoy good food.

Went to Geisha on Wednesday 3rd June. I was defintely NOT impressed with the service. The food was great but:

    1. The waiter did not even know about the specials when we first asked
    2. Then tells us it was no longer available
    3. There was no tuna fish so no tuna sushi
    4. The wine that we asked for was also out of stock (Beyerskloof pinotage)

Overall, not a very happy experience.

I also suggest updating the list with half price dim sum & tapas IN THE LOUNGE only

Thanks Benny, and what did you think of the Myoga Special?

@Vanessa, thanks for that feedback, I will note that the Geisha special is in the lounge only.

@Nols, I’m surprised to hear Aubergine was unimpressive, while I have never been, I’ve only heard good things. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to try it myself soon. Athough R185 for 2 courses doesn’t sound like a special price to me!

@Warren, thank you for your interest in my copy, I’ll email you.

Hi – Who has been to the Myoga special and what was it like. Last time we went we found the portions small but i suppose with 6 courses you cant go too far wrong. How does it compare with 5 Flies. Which has better food. Thanks Rene

Added Asara, Addis in Cape, Bertha’s and Gold African restaurant.

I heard Blues has a special on, but have not been able to verify it.

@Rene, I tried the Myoga special on Saturday night. I will post a review soon. The portions are small but that’s how it should be and I can’t compare it to 5 Flies because I haven’t eaten there in absolutely ages.

Hi Dax – Apparantely Blues have 22% off their menu prices as a winter special adn Tuscany Beach has only certain items on the “2 for 1 ” special so its not all as clear cut as it seems.
How did you find the Myoga special – is it worthwhile or do you think a normal priced meal at say Millers Thumb is nicer?

    • Dax #

At R150 without wines or R225 with wines, I think Myoga is a good option. Stop trying to sneak my review out of me!

o.k. but i believe its not great SO am going to try the early special tonight (in half an hour ) at the Kove in Camps Bay and will let you know what that is like – 50% off is ordered before 1845

  35. Dax #

Let me know how it is and I am trying the special at the Hildebrand tonight, 3 courses for R120.

  36. Rene #

Just come back from trying the specials at THE KOVE IN CAMPS BAY. They have 2 winter specials. A) 2 course plus a glass of wine for R100 or 3 course for R120 – choice of 4/5 different items. B)OR an early bird special – 1/2 price on ALL FOOD as long as your order is in before 1845. As I had already had half bottle of wine at home before eating we opted for the 50% off. I had calamri tubes grilled and served with a starch or veggies.- very nice and very large portion. 1/2 of R90 – hubby had the beef ribs which also came with starch or veg 1/2 of R100 – he said they were as good as those that Bayside serve although not as many but more than enough to eat. We ordered a side of onion rings and for dessert had “creme brulee” which had a ginger tasting caramel. – 1/2 of R40. Most desserts are in the R40-50 price category and then if youre wanting to go the whole hog you can have seafood. At half price its extremely good value. If youre in the mood for wine their R100/R120 works out about the same as the half price special – it just includes the wine and is available any time of night.

Thanks for that comprehensive feedback, Rene. It sounds like a good deal. I don’t normally eat that early but R100 for 2 courses with wine sounds appealing.

I just tried out the Hildebrand special. 3 courses for R120. The food was not bad and the venue is also ok, just a bit old school. The thing is I don’t normally eat 3 courses as it’s too much food. It turns out the Hildebrand is quite reasonably priced anyway, you coould have 2 courses for R100 or even less from the menu.

If you want 3 courses, it’s good value, otherwise I’d try some of the other specials.

I was raving about the pork prego at &Union recently

    http://www.relax-with-dax.co.za/?p=859#comment-37216

so thought I should let you know that at lunch time during the week you can get a prego, 500ml beer and coffee for R90. Which is about 20% off the normal price.

Just had a good quality and good value lunch at Wasabi, they are running some good specials:

25% off sushi lunch times and Sunday, Monday, Tuesday evening.
    R110 for 26pc sushi platter
R120 for 30pc tempura/dim sum/sushi platter (this is what we had, enough for 2)

I also had the Tom Yum soup (R39) which was amazing.

The Roundhouse has started an amazing new special, R180 for a 6 course dinner! I’ve added the details to the post along with a great Shoga special (5 tapas for R100) and I’ve updated the Addis special too.

I tried out the burger special at Caprice last night. They are still among the best burgers in Cape Town and a steal at half price. The place was quite empty, so no need to worry if you think the crowd is too trendy for you.

You can also find my review on the Myoga special here:

Thank you for a wonderful website. Our dog, Dax, was bummed to hear he is not the only good looking Dax in Cape Town!

We have been to Kove in Camps Bay twice, enjoying the R100 special for two courses and a glass of wine and the food is truly EXCELLENT! You choose off a smaller menu but the selection is great (except no vegetarian meals on the main courses). Highly recommended though!

Dax – have you or anyone else been to Addis – do you have to share tables or do you get your own table. What is the food like?

Tried out the special at Addis in Cape Tonight. They recommend the set menu and on a sat. night its half price so its R75 p.p. All i can say is if youre under 40, have a cast iron stomach, can walk up 3 flights of stairs, then this is the place for you. Its certainly different! Not somewhere i will rush back to even though i love spicey food! Hubby prefers a “bord kos”

Just to respond to Jolene’s Post
When we saw the special at the Kove 130 bucks for a three course including a glass of wine, we were a little wary as some of the specials are not always that special. Its on the Camps Bay strip which becomes pretty much vacant in Winter. The decor is great, and there is a specials menu which includes about 5 to 6 choices for each course. I ordered a Caesars salad which had a great anchovy dressing, I got on the side, my partner got the beef carpacio. Both were a high standard, and the salad portion was surprisingly ample, with well cooked bacon (not oily) and cos leaves. I got the Cabeljou and She got the Calamari. Both cooked perfectly. There were only 2 other value choices, otherwise burgers.
I paid a reasonable R10 extra to swap my rice for veg, which came perfectly cooked still firm. Recommended choice. Both meals were way above average with good attention to detail, the wine (red)was decent and at no point did we feel that we were eating a special, nor did it appear that there was any skimping at all. I must say that these guys have got the right idea, as I will now go back and try some of the other options off the special menu, which I have to say looked a little pricey, though not for the strip I guess. But food quality and detail will entice me back. It would be sweet if there were a few more classy (specials)mains to choose from. Service was friendly and upbeat, though the wait for the main was a little long for being quiet (10pm) but worth it.
For a glass of palatable wine, a fair size tasty Caesars salad and excellently prepared fish with salsa and generous aldente veg, for 110 bucks! Bill including one desert before tip- R240. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, which I highly recommend. I have tried many of the specials and I seriously don’t know where you could match this class of cuisine for the price.

  48. Concerning Geisha (aka liars, liars, pants on fires!)

Went there on Friday at 5pm for the “Half price sushi & dim sum before 7pm (in the lounge only) / 25% of noodle dishes
    Everyday”

Please note that the sushi, nor the dim sum, nor the noodle dishes are on special as advertised.
According to their manager it’s just their Tapas menu that’s on special. The Tapas available is in any case R60-R90 for 3 pieces, so NO SPECIAL here.

Maybe you should contact them Dax and ask them why they are such liars!

Hi Anel, thanks for the feedback. I’m taking Geisha off the specials list.

Good news is I’m adding the Nova special which started today: 4 courses for R175.

I still advise everyone to call before taking advantage of a special as the restaurants can stop them or change them any time.

    Hi Dax

    Thanks for all these specials!
Just a note, I phoned Addis and they said the R90 special is not on at all, but R75 for 2 courses on a Saturday…

So instead of going to Addis on Friday, I went with a group of friends to Andiamo’s – and it was GREAT! The food was delicious, and the restaurant was full so there was a really nice atmosphere.
The deal at Andiamo is 2 pizzas and 2 glasses of wine for R99 or the listed pasta special.

[...] One of the things I like about Cape Town in the winter, is that there are plenty of restaurant specials and winter menus to take advantage of.
